For years, small fleet operators have struggled to follow traditional bookkeeping methods and to understand how various types of expenses impact their tax liabilities. Listening to popular voices in the industry can add shades of confusion to your operation. For example:
Should your company make the S-Corp election?
How much should you pay toward quarterly estimated taxes?
How can my business pay for my personal medical insurance?
Can my lease-purchase equipment be depreciated or does it make more sense to buy it?
Which supplies can I expense to the company?
Should I pay my spouse and/or kids?
Can my spouse claim per diem expenses, too?
Here’s a fast answer: It depends. The answer always depends on your situation and will be influenced by your goals, changes in the market, and changes to our tax code.
We believe the trucking industry business owners need more than just bookkeeping and payroll services, followed by year-end tax services. We believe your accounting professional should understand your industry. Many accountants and CPAs are unaware or out-of-date in their knowledge of tax deductions and credits that are (or should be!) commonplace for a trucking business.
We’ve decided to change that. Jones Tax is more than just accounting services. The difference is in our approach, which we call the Total Accounting Partners (TAP) program, which has been built from the ground up to focus solely on the trucking industry. With TAP you get:
A robust online bookkeeping platform that includes monthly account reconciliation (a must for S-Corps and Partnerships)
Year-end tax prep for your personal and business taxes
Strategic consultations to keep us aligned on your goals and to minimize your tax liability
Access to our expert team
Peace of mind that your bookkeeping is complete and accurate
This is your one place to keep up with all things trucking and accounting related. As our industries change so do the things that can impact your business. Every month we'll post a new podcast with insights and tips on how to stay ahead in your business.
Jones Tax is not your typical accounting firm. We exist to serve the trucking and transportation industry. Our founder, Chris Jones, has a diverse technical background that gives us unique insights into your industry most accounting firms don’t even know they’re missing. Chris started his career as a professionally licensed Chemical Engineer, designing water treatment facilities, analyzing cost benefits of improvements, and managing construction oversight. After 10 years, Chris left engineering consulting to create a business that will help business owners in the trucking industry.
Not aware of his passion for accounting and tax optimization yet, Chris created a nation-wide distribution company for high-end aftermarket parts for truckers. This is where Chris learned about diesel engines, APU’s, EGR system failures, and the struggle truck owners experience to keep their equipment on the road and out of the shop.
Connecting with other industry experts, such as SiriusXM radio host for Trucking Business & Beyond, Kevin Rutherford, Chris found his home in an industry that needs help...but parts distribution wasn’t where Chris saw himself offering the most value.
Chris founded Jones Tax in 2014, initially purchasing a national tax franchise in Lee’s Summit, Missouri. The original plan was for Chris to manage the operation but he didn’t realize that, much like the trucking industry, tax code and accounting system optimization is what gets this guy out of bed in the morning. In lieu of seeking therapy, Chris became an Enrolled Agent with the IRS and is actively involved in both national and local organizations for CPAs, EAs, and tax preparers to ensure his team remains on the cutting edge of tax code changes.
After selling the tax store franchise, Jones Tax teamed up with Kevin Rutherford’s team at Let’s Truck to prepare their client’s tax returns. We have prepared thousands of tax returns for trucking business owners and have heard the questions you need to be answered. We have noticed the same errors in your bookkeeping reports and omissions of information that help us minimize your tax liability.
Jones Tax is committed to helping you and your trucking business succeed but we don’t believe we should do all of your accounting and end-of-year tax compliance work. Instead, we believe we should become part of your team to help you understand your business and make smart decisions.
This is the essence of our Total Accounting Partners program: Jones Tax exists to proactively provide tools and knowledge that remove typical frustrations related to your company’s accounting.
